Want to score high in English? Here is a Section C - Language Analysis Essay, with annotations and tips, by one of our amazing tutors Amy! (English 49 Raw Score)

English is super tricky, but there are definitely things you can do to ameliorate your scores (and decrease your stress)!

The reason I scored high in this essay was my minute analysis of language and imagery, which is incredibly important in language analysis articles which really want to tap into reader fear. To do this, I would recommend you check out the examiners’ reports for Literature, Section B Passage Analysis, as you can read examples of high-scoring lit students who have done the same thing! I always tell my students that to be good at English you have to read stuff that is better than yours - it’s the only way to learn! I would also recommend keeping a word bank, re-writing old essays rather than writing new ones (as you’re fixing your errors and not repeating them) as well as reading other students’ work. Read widely, think deeply and make sure you have some balance in your lives! I think it’s also important that students be kind to themselves, English is a cumulative skill which you won’t master overnight, but consistent work will definitely raise your score.

Best of luck!

Amy Hale

Any Mathematical Methods student who wants to get a 40 study score needs to be able to correctly answer this question in less than 1 minute. Can you?

Worked Solution:
Tips:
  • Always remember to double-check if your solutions are valid in square root, log and hyperbolae/truncuses as these functions have implied domains.
  • Once you have excluded any answers, to confirm that your answer/s are correct, substitute your answer/s back into the original equation. In this case you would substitute that answer of x=4 back into the original equation and find that the left hand side of the equation equals to 3, which is the same as the right hand side, and therefore the answer of x=4 must be correct.
