- Once you have excluded any answers, to confirm that your answer/s are correct, substitute your answer/s back into the original equation. In this case you would substitute that answer of x=4 back into the original equation and find that the left hand side of the equation equals to 3, which is the same as the right hand side, and therefore the answer of x=4 must be correct.
